Toomavara (Tommy) is our very dear chestnut 16 year old Irish Sports Horse. Tommy was brought over from Ireland by top show producer Katie Jerram. As a six and seven year old he won many Riding Horse Championships at County Shows with Katie and competed at HOYs. I even have a copy of Horse & Hound where he appears as a full page spread!
I have had Tommy for 5 years and at 14, in 2011, he started eventing as we discovered he had a tremendous jump. Within a few months he was going Novice, but after a run on hard ground he developed concussion laminitis. Being a big horse his outlook was not great, but our vet immediately suggested Andrew Poynton who rapidly came to our aid and fitted his Imprint First laminitis shoes. From that moment Tommy was not only in much less pain, but his prospects were much brighter.
What Andrew has been able to do is not only provide shoes that help him and mould and move dynamically with his hoof wall, but he has also worked over the last 18 months to rebuild Tommy’s damaged feet with a combination of his skill and Imprint Hoof Repair the thermoplastic repair material.
By last summer Tommy was in fine form. I decided because of his age not to continue to event him, but in addition to dressage he has been able to enjoy his jumping by taking part in Working Hunter Classes – and winning! In September he had great fun taking part in the Eventers Challenge at Blenheim Horse Trials, as you can see from the photographs, and delivered a stylish and fast clear round wearing his Imprint Sport shoes (with stud holes which allow him to wear studs).
I have lost a horse previously from Laminitis and my dread was that history was going to repeat itself with Tommy. But not only has he recovered he is also back competing successfully, all thanks to Andrew and his Imprint shoes
